Los Gitanos, meaning Gypsy, is South Africa's leading live Latin band, and undoubtedly one of Cape Town 's most popular and successful groups. Lead by Cape Town guitar maestro Bienyameen, the band has shared the stage with international groups Shakatak, Kaoma and the Lambada Band from Paris. Their extremely wide repertoire makes their style hard to categorise; it includes everything from Mexican, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Greek, Turkish, Arabic, Russian, Jewish and South American up to "Kaapse Goemma" music! They adapt their program to suit the needs of the client / audience, and can do anything from a program of cover songs and golden oldies, to Spanish flamenco shows, etc.
Los Guitanos - exciting, vibrant and passionate - originally started as the "Pablo Navorro Trio", and was renamed "Los Guitanos" when Pablo died 11 years ago. And they are indeed Gypsies (hence the name) - they perform in costume (usually Bolivian panchos) en serenade in groups of 2-8, using exciting instruments including guitars, viola, bass, percussion, mandolin, charrango, bazooki, cabasa, sax, vocals, etc. The Los Gitanos acoustic group performs in the Mariachi style, which is a traditional Mexican strolling ensemble, popular throughout the Latin countries. The amplified band can provide a full evening's entertainment with music that will have everyone dancing!
