DNA STRINGS

DNA Strings have been performing since 2000. Their style of music can be described by the following phrases/words: Folk-Rock, Afro-Spanish, Afro-Celtic. The music, of which the essence is captured in their live shows, can be described as pulsating, energetic, uplifting, passionate and powerful. Due to the fact that the music is not limited to one style, genre or culture only, they have a fan base ranging from the youngest to the oldest, and can perform at any event, from rock concerts to corporate functions to weddings.

Highlights of their career are the following:

  • More than 6000 of their first CD, ‘DNA Strings’, was sold up until June 2004 without any network distribution.
  • The Song Tranquillity also features on the compilation CD Tranquillity 2, of which more than 14 000 copies was sold up until September 2003.
  • DNA Strings was invited to be part of the ‘Main Festival’ of KKNK ’03. DNA Strings shared a venue with music Icons such as Valiant Swart, Piet Botha, Karen Zoid and American blues singer/songwriter/pianist Edith Brent. Following their performance at this festival they were nominated for 2 Kanna awards in the categories ‘Best Newcomer’ & ‘Best Original Music’. KKNK ’04 was a huge success boasting several sold-out shows and Kanna nominated performance with Cut Glass, Steve Hofmeyr, Georgis and ddisselblom.
  • Black Moon , a song of their CD El Niño , was used as the title track for a Kyknet nature program “Groen” and another song, Ontrafel as title track for the music program “Gons”.

  • DNA Strings played at the launch of SABC3’s The Weakest Link, Kyknet’s Plek van DieVleisvreters and SABC music show, Pitstop.
  • Performed at the Jazz in the Park with Vusi Mashlasela and ddisselblom.
  • DNA Strings performed at the KKNK 2004 as part of their CD-launch and will also be part of “A Tribute to Johannes Kerkorrel”, a exclusive show that is being put together by the management of KKNK. Other artists involved is ddisselblom , Georgia and Steve Hofmeyer with Cut Glass . In total they will performed in 11 shows.
  • Their performance at the RSG-stage were broadcast on live radio.  

Collaborations:  

Live Performances:
DNA Strings, or members of DNA Strings have collaborated in live performances with well known artists like Brasse van die Kaap, Karin Zoid, Laurinda Hofmeyer, Judith Sepuma , Nianell , Steyn Fourie, Alta Joubert, Jakkie Louw, Riana Nell, Dawid Voster and the Noisemakers, etc.

Recording Projects:
All five members have worked with other well known artists on solo recording projects. Iwan Kemp (drums and percussion), Jacques Steyn (bass) and Danie Kotze (violin) has recorded with Dawid Voster and the Noisemakers. Iwan Kemp played on Dowwe Dolla’s hit song “Sny dit af” , for her tour with the Big 5 , and recorded with Pedro Kruger (Lieriekeraai and many other plays) on a play for writer Hennie van Greunen. The play , Die Laaste Aand , was performed at Aardklop and KKNK in 2002. He (Iwan Kemp) was also involved in a national launch for MTN.

Danie Kotze (violin) will be collaborating with Die Brasse van die Kaap on a remake of the 7nde Laan (SABC2) theme music. DNA Strings has been asked to work on recording projects with Disselblom, Riku Latti, Karin Zoid and Liesl Marx.

Their second CD , entitled El Niño , was officially launched 30 / 31 January 2004 at the Centurion Theatre. This CD captures them performing Irish / Folk-Rock / African and South American influenced music , for which they are well known. It is being distributed countrywide by Bowline Disrubution. The CD has been well received by critics and has received a lot of exposure since then. 8000 units have been sold by Junue 2004.
